Did You Know?

Peter Hume has represented our community, locally and regionally, for the past 19 years. In 1991, at the age of 27, he was elected to represent Alta Vista on Ottawa City Council. In 1994, Peter was elected as a member of the first-ever directly elected Regional Council for Ottawa-Carleton and re-elected in 1997. Peter was elected to the newly amalgamated City of Ottawa in November 2000, acclaimed in 2003 and re-elected in 2006 and 2010.

Peter Hume suggested several years ago that the Balena Park field house could be developed into a recreation centre and community activities hub. Applying to the city to bring the concept forward from general revenues takes years and there is no assurance of approval. But the project is underway -- Peter is bringing together local citizens to discuss the initial drawings to determine the best way move this project forward.

Peter Hume introduced a policy to audio-cast all city standing committee meetings. The public has a right to know instantly what the committees are proposing. These audio and web casts should be stored in an indexed and searchable archive for easy public access to committee deliberations. The public has a right to hear what is said when it's said.

Peter Hume has a plan to ensure the "pipes, pavement and parks" in Alta Vista and the rest of Ottawa are properly maintained for future generations - without breaking the bank. As our community matures, our infrastructure ages - the city has already invested in sewer and water rehabilitation on streets like Pleasant Park, Blossom, Cluny and Knox. Investment in local parks includes Applewood, Cecil Morrison and Orlando. And, new sidewalks and multipurpose pathways were installed in the Alta Vista Corridor and on roadways including Acton, Pleasant Park, and Aster. Over the next four years, Grasshopper Hill and Canterbury Park must have our attention.

Councillor Peter Hume held a Town Hall meeting on November 1 at Rideau Park United Church. Peter responds to questions on the City of Ottawa 2012 Draft Budget and other Alta Vista community issues.

Long time residents of Alta Vista John and Joyce Wright hosted Maria Josefina Pinochet, 17 years old, from Chile. Ms. Pinochet won an English writing competition and the prize was a trip to Canada. During her trip to Ottawa Mr. & Mrs. Wright brought her on a tour of City Hall and met Councillor Hume and Mayor Watson.
